Truro is the main administrative centre for Cornwall, and is the county’s main shopping and leisure hub. Formerly an important centre for trade, Truro is now a tourist destination, with a cathedral, museum and the Hall for Cornwall event space, which hosts everything from West End musicals to opera, ballet and contemporary music. Festivals take place at Lemon Quay in the city centre, including the Truro City Carnival and the Winter Festival at Christmas.
The city is located on the A390 and A39 trunk roads, and is six miles from the main A30 route to Exeter. Drive time to Plymouth is an hour-and-a-quarter, and to Exeter and the M5 motorway is just over an hour-and-a-half.
Truro station is on the Cornish Main Line from Penzance to Plymouth operated by First Great Western, with direct connections to London, Birmingham, Leeds and Edinburgh. Expect journey times of an hour-and-a-quarter to Plymouth, just under three hours to Exeter, around five hours to London Paddington and only a little longer to Birmingham.
Truro is also less than 30 minutes’ drive to Newquay Cornwall Airport, with direct year-round flights to London Gatwick and Manchester. Summer flights include destinations such as Belfast, Birmingham, Dublin, Dusseldorf, Edinburgh, Liverpool, London Stansted and Newcastle.
Major employers in the city include the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Cornwall Council, and Truro College. Employment is high, and so the property market is the region;s strongest. Conference facilities are available at The Business Space in the city centre.
