We’ve done it again, we’ve created our annual festive playlist. Last year featured some true classics whereas this year we’ve gone slightly more alternative (and added an extra song!).
With appearances from The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas and Shonen Knife, this playlist is a sure solution to Michael Bublé’s usual Christm(assault) on the senses. Have a listen to our top Yuletide picks and let us know what we’ve missed in the comments below!
I Wish It Was Christmas Today - Julian Casablancas
Joe B: “I have always been a big fan of The Strokes (for whom Julian is the lead singer) as well as slightly strange ‘indie’; Christmas songs, so my pick is the coolest one I could think of! It kinda just sounds exactly like The Strokes with Christmas bells. Who wouldn’t like that?â€
Christmas Wrapping - The Waitresses
Chris D: “I wanted to say Nick Lowe’s cover of ‘I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day’, but it’s important The Waitresses’; ‘Christmas Wrapping’; is in there as it is the best. So it has to be that.â€
Sweet Christmas - Shonen Knife
Imogen: “Kurt Cobain once said that Shonen Knife were his favourite band, and I’m sure that he’d agree that their song ‘Sweet Christmas’ is the best Christmas-cake-themed song out there.â€
I Want An Alien For Christmas - Fountains Of Wayne
Chris M: “Fun, poppy and actually a pretty good song - while replacing sickly sentiment with little green men. And if it makes at least one person go and explore the wonder that is Fountains of Wayne, then it’s got to be worth it.â€
Wonderful Dream - Melanie Thornton
Stef: “This song will never be out of date! It’s just a classic Christmas song and not just because it was covered in the Coca-Cola commercial, but because it’s a great song.â€
Driving Home For Christmas - Chris Rea
Marta: “For me, Christmas means a long journey home and no other song reminds me of it more than Chris Rea’s ‘Driving Home For Christmas’. The year when British Airways decided they would not fly because of an inch of snow and cancelled my flight, I was determined to make it for my Christmas dinner and drove instead. Chris Rea saved the day - we sang together for the 27 hours it took.â€
Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence - Ryuichi Sakamoto
Indre: “My song this year is a little bit on the slow side but it’s so magical - soft and beautiful, like snowflakes!â€
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas - Judy Garland
Lizzie: “I object to the Frank Sinatra version of ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ - it should be Judy Garland as she sang the original.â€
